SMNLL Mourns the Loss of Mike Davino

The San Mateo National Little League family is mourning the loss of a great friend. Mike Davino passed away suddenly on the 4th of July weekend. The SMNLL Head Groundskeeper, Mike was so much more than the “hardest working man in the Little League”. He was a wonderful father to Jason and Meghan, a loving husband to Corinne, a coach for many years in our league, and the type of person that wasn’t just loved by everyone he came in contact with, he was respected. It is with heavy hearts that we dedicated the District 52 11 Year Old Tournament we hosted to Mike, the man that helped provide us the wonderful fields our teams play on, and loved them so much. We will all miss such a dear friend and teammate.

Funeral Services were held on Friday July 16th at All Souls Church in South San Francisco.

A trust fund has been set up for the Davino Children. Donations can be mailed to:

Let the Off Season Begin

The All Star Tournaments ended for all our teams Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing the 2010 SMNLL season to a final conclusion. Congratulations to all the post season teams, who combined for a remarkable 14-6 run. We especially congratulate and say good luck but not good-bye to our 12 year old “retiring” players, who we look forward to seeing around the field for many years to come as umpires and some day as coaches (just like our own former SMNLL player Dave Hernandez, retiring for a second time from our league…).

To all the players, coaches, volunteers and supporters, from Tball through the Majors, thank you for making the 2010 season an exciting and fun daily baseball experience. We hope you had as much fun as we did – we’ll see you next season!

Red Sox Win Triple Crown!

Not since the days of Carl Yastrzemski has Red Sox and Triple Crown been used in the same sentence. Not until Sunday, that is, when the SMNLL Red Sox completed their own Triple Crown by capturing the Majors City Tournament Championship with a 5-1 win over the amazing SMNLL Tigers. Congratulations to a fantastic Red Sox team that won the regular Season Championship with a 19-1 record, gave up no runs in winning the Wood Bat Tournament, and now have run the table in the City Championship. Quite a season for the Big Red Sox Machine!

Congratulations also to the SMNLL Cardinals for winning the Majors Mayors Cup with their win over the SMNLL Brewers, the SMLLA Storm, winners of the AAA City Tournament over the SMNLL Red Sox, and the AAA Mayors Cup Champion SMNLL Braves, defeating the SMNLL Angels.

It was a great tournament with all 16 teams playing their hearts out, leaving it all out on the field, and bringing a great conclusion to the regular team seasons of the SMNLL and the SMLLA. Thanks to all our friends at SMLLA for hosting a great tournament. We look forward to returning the favor next year.

Red Sox Win the Wood Bat Tournament!

The Red Sox continued their 2010 dominance by running the table in the Wood Bat Tournament, completing a three game shutout streak with a 5-0 defeat of the Cardinals.

Congratulations to manager Arnie Sambel and the entire Red Sox team on their fine week of pitching, hitting and defense, and congratulations to not only the Cardinals for their thrilling week of wins to put them in the championship game, but to all the teams for a great Wood Bat Tournament. It was a week of classic baseball that made you wonder what ever happened to your container of pine tar.

Good luck to everyone as they take on the SMLLA next!

June 2, 2010:

Phillies Win! Phillies Win!

In a fitting, down to the wire conclusion to a great Play Off Tournament, the AAA Phillies beat the Yankees 3-1 in the final championship game.

Congratulations to Manager Silvio Rocha and the entire Phillies team for a great win, and congratulations to the Yankees for battling their season co-champions right to the end.

All eight AAA teams should be holding their heads high tonight, not only toasting the champion Phillies, but themselves for a hard fought and well played play off series.

May 27, 2010:

SMNLL Parents Play Well Together!

If you missed this year’s SMNLL Parent Social last weekend, circle your calendar for May 2011 now because you don’t want to miss it again!

Great food, tasty beverages, fun music (and dancing) and probably just a little too much “shop talk”, but believe us when we say a GREAT time was had by everyone who attended.

And on top of all that, the silent auction brought in $1829.50 to the batting cage fund!

Thanks to all the teams that contributed to the silent auction, thanks to La Boheme Restaurant in Burlingame for being such wonderful hosts, and a very special thanks to Shannon Godtfredsen and the Auxiliary Board for a special night to remember after a season of very hard work for everyone.

Can’t wait for next year!
