What’s After Majors?

Traditional Little League ends after a child’s 12-year-old season, but for most kids, their love of the game doesn’t. Fortunately, they can stay involved with baseball after their last SMNLL Majors season by continuing to play, becoming an umpire, or both.

Keep Playing!

There are two main options for 13-year-olds who want to keep playing:

  1. SMNLL Juniors
  2. Bel Mateo Babe Ruth

Both are excellent programs, though there are key differences that can help your family decide which is the best fit for your child’s development and enjoyment of the game. A few things to consider:

  • Field dimensions take a big jump up from SMNLL Majors’ 45-foot pitching distance and 60-foot bases. Juniors moves to 54/80, and Babe Ruth goes all the way to 60’6”/90’ — full size, like MLB. Kids are different sizes and adapt differently to a bigger field, so this can have a real effect on your child’s experience.
  • Player ages: Juniors is for ages 13–14 and is designed to seamlessly transition to high school ball. Babe Ruth runs through age 15, where high school players are also allowed.
  • Player pool: Juniors is generally comprised of kids who played in SMNLL, so your child will likely know many of their teammates. Babe Ruth draws from throughout San Mateo County, which may mean a bigger, less familiar group.
  • Practice and game schedules differ quite a bit between the two, and may fit your family’s schedule differently.

Travel ball is also an option — see your local travel ball teams for more information.

Become an Umpire!

Your child’s recent experience as a player is an asset that will help them call a fair game. Umpiring is a great way for them to deepen their knowledge of baseball, stay involved in the Little League community, and build their confidence and leadership skills. See our full guide to becoming an umpire for eligibility, pay, and how to apply. Email Josh Villegas at umpires@smnlittleleague.com with any questions.
